In Other News- Melissa Bavanandan

Final Project Proposal:

In other News…

This project aims to demonstrate how monumental the past three years have been by creating a visual timeline of major events that have taken place during this time; archiving such landmark events as 2004 Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, July bombings, War in Iraq and Saddam Hussein’s execution. By cross- referencing and comparing our ‘local’ university experience to that of ‘global’ events, I hope to illustrate the significant changes that have occurred on a personal and universal level.

Whilst the primary aim of the piece is to represent the enormity of a three-year degree course, the project will also question the relevance of Graphic Design.

To some degree, this piece is controversial, as it seemingly belittles the design world by paralleling significantly greater problems in the ‘real world’; however, this project ultimately glorifies and supports the designer, as it will reveal that it is mostly through Graphic Communication that these issues are communicated to the rest of the world.

The proposed end product will be a printed news-spread that will be distributed at the show and published in an article in Wonderland magazine, (June edition).

Again, this proposal laeves me cold. Whilst you may think that there is scope- your total findings could be covered in a magazien spread that belies the demands of a major project. We are also at a point where news, (allied to world affairs) is so well supported by sophisticated graphic devices, I woudl question where is there to go?
