This project concerns communication with the dead.
Almost every culture has strong relations with ancestors and spirits and our multicultural society provides ample material for this purpose. However, in London we remain strangely disconnected from the spiritual world.
I would like simply to provide shelter for homeless spirits in the form of small structures. Form and ornamentation will be well considered and will be adapted to reflect contemporary values - although the meaning will be universal.
This is not a morbid evocation of death, rather a celebration of common human experience.
I am enchanted by the marvellous collection of artefacts housed by the British Museum in its 'life and death' exhibit, sponsored by the Welcome Trust. They have written,
People around the world seek well-being for themselves and for their communities in many different ways. These differing approaches reflect the ways they understand their world. Some people see well-being in terms of the individual and the body. Others think of it at the level of the community, requiring the maintenance of important relationships. These relationships might be with other people, animals, spirits or the earth.
