Cristina Pais

Having reconsidered my original concept I have re-aligned a more established outcome.

The aim of this project is to reach different audiences through design, being these audiences professional typographers/designers.

Outcome:

-Four different typefaces. I will target different magazines/studios/designers in order to try to generate any kind of interest and, as a result, get some comments out of them.

-Four A2 posters showing each of the typefaces in creative application. The theme will be comments from professional typographers/designers.

-Professional feedback.

When I have the outcome sorted I'll contact those typographers/designers that could be interested in using it (rather fonts or posters) or at least to give any kind of feedback.

The feedback should demonstrate if the different designs reach different audiences.

This sounds quite interesting since no-one else is doing a purely type-based project at this point! Would expand the range of the show. You can still produce some beautiful visuals only using fonts like those posters Jonathan Barnbrook showed at his lecture.

Hi Cristina

Is it not possible to rebrand typefaces for select companies? How about approaching magazines and proposing a new type for editorials or fashion designers that may need typefaces for particular seanoal collections of their merchandise? This would give you guidlines to work with. I think this is a good area as joanna said it adds variety to the content of the show, just think it might need to focus more on who you want to work with.

Actually I approached a spanish magazine DiseƱo Interior exactly for that reason. The only problem is that I´m waiting for them to get back to me (they said nest week).
But in the meantime instead of contacting typographers like i was doing i might contact studios to see if they would use my typefaces. I just need to do them first... And see if my idea is approved!
And, yes, joanna i think with type you can design beautiful posters to show the potential of the type.
Thanks bothx

I was thinking that to link everything together I might ask typographers/designers for a sentence describing a typeface I made -why they like it (or not) and if they feel it's their style (or not)- and use it as the theme for the posters.
Every poster would be a comment made by a typographer about a particular typeface (comment and name).
I would love to get Neville Brody to make a comment and make a poster out of this, with his signature!
Also, I'll try with Lippa Pearce, Non Format, Fold 7, Si Scott, etc., a selection of my favorite studios/typographers/designers, to focus on who I would love to work with.

A good, solid project- I understand it more clearly. What is urgently needed in order to add excitment, intrigue and scope for origianlity are your 4 themes/clients/focusses.

Four divers fonts would really demonstrate your abilities, you could choose one from each in obvious scetors:

Music industry
Fashion
Arst and galleries
Print, journalism
Information
Corporate identity
etc, etc, etc...

Thank you Geoff,
I was thinking on music, fashion, editorial and corporate identity, as I could get very different typefaces but, I really like the idea of galleries/museums that you said as it's part of my vocation.

I will do (in that order):

1. Editorial (serif)
2. Galleries/museums (sans serif)
3. Fashion (decorative)
4. Music (broken, dirty, noisy...)
4. Corporate Identity (new, fresh...)

BIG DOUBTS ABOUT WHICH ONE SHOULD BE THE FORTH (I appreciate comments from all of you)

As soon as I finish the first one I'll send it to different magazines.

When approved I'll document the evolution on a blog.

Cool stuff Cris! For the last one what about something that can be applied to web? (Pixel fonts? There's a special category for them at dafont.com) I'm thinking in terms of the final range of contexts in which your fonts will be used, it might be interesting to have a screen based one.

I think that this is a really good project for you. Your skills with layout and type will make a stunning piece of graphics.Based on what we were discussing, I think it would be best to stick to 4 area, with the final being music. Corporate Identity is too vague and actaully lends itself to al of the genres. In any case, you have already have things in mind for the music sector. Maybe try to target smaller companies so that you will be more creatively free to work.

Thanks for the comments, in the blog and in person.
I was thinking on who I am going to send my fonts to.
I think is good if I still target big name magazines and studios in order to get "valid" feedback (Wallpaper, Wonderland, Research Studios and Non Format are examples) but at the same time, in order to get someone to use them I think I have to come down to earth and talk to university magazines (LCC or London College of Fashion for instance) as the mentioned before don't really need changes (at the moment).
But I don't want to limit my self to magazines.

After seeing how successful your Ghostfest Typography Poster was, I think that this is a very exciting project for you to do, especialy as it is somthing you would like to get into when you leave uni. And imagine if you sell all four of your font designs by the end of this, that would be so cool.

What do you think?
Would it be possible to collaborate with live FMP (like Asya's or Aleister's) in order to see my typefaces live as well? I've already asked some people... just in case it's possible.

Great stuff Cristina, this is really coming together now. I think your right in not limiting yourself to magazines as well and approaching less established names allowing you more freedom.
LCF or individual designers that have their stuff in selfridges or eclectic shops is good for fashion.
I also think events or concerts would add variety, like music/ theatre, as well as what we spoke about- prospectus for chelsea as part of the editorial category? hope this helps you.

I agree with Aims- variety will be key for this project. Similar to the Lippapearce project, you are making 'Type come to life', and almost giving it various personas. The versality of different fonts, different media and different genre will all add to your concept, not to mention making a great piece for your portfolio.

Your project is provoking a whole deal of intelligent responses from fellow students, a good thing.

I'm sure that the 4 distinctive themes that you are looking for will firm up, with a little more exploration...it will also be good to have 'live' elements within this project, desirable but not essential.

As melissa suggested I'm going to go for music instead of branding to add more variety to the outcome. Therefore I have my 4 sectors well defined:

1. Editorial (serif)
2. Galleries/museums (sans serif)
3. Fashion (decorative)
4. Music (broken, dirty, noisy...)

I think they can be unmistakable!

In the meantime I'm trying to get my FMP "to live" through different channels but I haven't heard from anyone yet. (It might be easier when at least I have an outline of my typefaces). If anyone knows someone that could be interested please let me know. Maybe we can help each other.
