Aimee Gillett - design for festival

I want to direct my final project towards a number of interests, one of which is events organisation. What better way to do it than to design for the event my hometown is renowned for? Glastonbury festival of music and performing arts.
I have approached the only designer of the festival, as well as the events organiser and asked whether they would be interested in me designing promotional graphics for the event at the end of June. Although they would like to maintain the spirit of the pyramid stage within their identity, (representing the glastonbury tour) they are open to new ideas for the festival's visual look to promote in and around the local area. The organiser has also informed me that the festival is preparing to open a new area this year called 'The park'. This will host live acoustic performances, DJ sets, poetry and plays, all in celebration of the very first festival 37 years ago and she would like this area promoted due to its new location.
The body of the project will entail designing a visual look for the festival based on the theme of it going 'back to basics' this year. This will extend to: website, posters, schedule posters specifying events such as: film, plays, performances, tickets, vehicle passes, zone passes and guides handed out on site. All of which involve working alongside the designer and the organiser which I feel is a great opportunity. The specifics are not completely clarified at this point. I am meeting the designer and festival office manager on tuesday next week to organise in more detail. I would really appreciate some feedback on this project. I understand its a big undertaking and quite a bit of responsibility. I think its a great project to get immersed in.

Hi michelle

Well they seem quite open to new ideas which is great and they love helping students. like I have mentioned they want it to be about the essence of glastonbury and bringing it back to what it was like when it all started. They want to keep the pyramid stage within the design which is easy to play around with. Im thinking non preachy, simple and in spirit of unifying ppl with music. it doesn't need a huge amount of selling! Lets see how the meeting goes...

5o quid an we're on! I could make some serious money getting the whole of des com on. Might end up being a bill bailey type sketch with the neverending exit from a tent.

Aimee, this sounds like a fantastic live brief with lots of potential! How much creative freedom would you get on this? Would you be given free reign (within reason) to design the festival promo or would the other designer have to approve or edit work to fit in with his/her existing style?

I am happy to approve this project so long as you are sure that there is sufficient creative scope for you and that the client understands how inportanet this final project is in terms of your assesment. I'm sure you will know more certainly when you have your next client meeting.

I think this project sounds like something you will enjoy doing. It sounds like there's enough stuff to work on for 14 weeks so u can really dive into it. I think that can really work, as I thought the design work you've done 4 creamfields was excellent and really in tone with the creamfields fest. Im sure u will do an even better job for this. Let us know how the meeting goes. Mary

Just a quick note from internet cafe, only 5 mins left. Meeting was really interesting and I saw all the posters right back from the seventies. They are also really excited about some outside input. Seems the parameters are not going to constrain me too much. Will discuss further on wednesday
