Hey guys, I have been thinking about what to have at our final show for my project and would like to know your thoughts. Ideas:
- having my billboard printed twice and having one of them there. (10ft high by 20ft wide)
- Some sort of autobiography however I do not want to write a book as that would take me too long. Maybe it could just be with images and a bit of text???
-my personal blog is definately the best way of showing my journey so could I simply have that? (would rather have more)
-goodie bags promoting myself i.e mugs, keyrings etc
-magazine spreads printed large scale demonstrating each method I undertook to become famous
-any other ideas??
Please put down a comment if you think any of these are worth persuing or if you have another idea as I would really appreciate an insight to your genius ideas!
Thank you
Michelle

Alex Kirmitsis - Web Design Exploration
My visit in Cyprus helped me evaluate my clients concerning this web design project. I had a number of long meetings with various companies and organizations and I came down with 3 potential clients. I think the following 3 cover the requirements for an interesting and stimulating project which includes an enterprise importing and distributing international brands, an advertising agency with plenty of output material concerning our field of graphic design (motion graphics, advertising, branding etc), and finally a non-profit organization of adventure seekers and 4x4 car lovers.
These are the profiles of those clients:
1. Kirmico Ltd
Kirmico is a company involved with office machines and equipment for almost 50 years, for the last 12 years they have been specializing in Printers, Automatic Coin Processing Machines, and Professional Scanners and document Shredding machines. Kirmico has been importing well-known office machine brands like KYOCERA printers, SCAN COIN and FUJITSU.
The company always employs trained and experienced technicians and engineers for the installation and support of the proposed printers and various machinery. They are in productive cooperation with many respectable companies involved in the Information Technology.
Furthermore, they organize training seminars to a number of technicians from the I.T. Dept. of various major account customers which makes them capable of first level repairs which saves a lot of down-time cost to all parties concerned.
2.Contact Advertising Agency LTD
Contact are following an evolutionary route from a traditional advertising agency to full spectrum Communications Company. They offer Integrated Communication services and they generate ideas that build value for their clients' brands and ensure their success. They also believe in strategic partnerships in order to accelerate their evolution for their clients benefit.
Contact's Mission:
Generate strategic ideas that help brands resonate in people's hearts and thus they create brand loyalty and brand preference.
3.Extreme 4x4 Adventure
The Land Rover story runs parallel to the history of 4x4 driving and adventure seeking. This could not have been any different in Cyprus and these locals or visitors who enjoy this exciting side of life… those who dare.
Adventure does not necessarily need to be on the wild or even dangerous side. It can very well be, of a pleasant type. Those who seek it are those who like the adrenaline to run above normal everyday levels hoping to be just enough to add some spice in their life.
The website will be dedicated to all those enthusiasts’ who love Land Rovers and their unique capabilities. It aims to promote everything related to this particular make of automobiles and assist those people who want to enjoy such an experience. It will attempt to explain and bring to their attention what they may need to know.

Subtraction
I would like to produce an experimental piece of graphics, based around the key idea of subtraction. I will explore formal aspects like structure, scale and tactility to create a printed object- not sure if it will be a book exactly but i would like to work within the confines of pages and layout- that addresses notions of maximalism and minimalism in graphic design (the ornamental, decorative, and cluttered and the bare, straightforward and essential).
Flea markets, as highly graphic places, chaotic and seemingly undesigned in nature would supply the raw material for the book, whilst locating the project within contemporary visual culture. A selected number of images of local markets and of retrieved objects will be the basis for experimentation. The vernacular visual language of these can refer not only to the designer’s role as cultural mediator within both high and low culture, but also to designers fascination with the beauty of the spontaneous and undesigned, that is frequently coupled with the contradictory urge to order and plan. .
This project would allow me to produce a beautiful piece of print whilst pushing my vocational interests.
Any comments very much appreciated!
Karina - Youth Cultures comparison
(not sure about the title yet sorry!)
Hi everyone! I have been posting so many ideas for F.M.P. and was really struggling on choosing the right one for me. But with GTS’s help I think I have something interesting and worth to do as my final project. Especially because it is related to my own culture and can be a good project to represent my work in the future.
Idea proposal: I will be looking at the development of lifestyles of two youth cultures one in Russia and another one in England. Relying on my own experience, with help from my friends, and comparing it to my own peer group in London.
I will be looking at Russian equivalent of:
• Youth tv
• Celebrities
• Snack Food
• Romantic Rituals
• Topical Fashion
• Reading
• Family Relationships
• Gay scene
…etc
The outcome could be produced with use of images and text, and set of information reflecting real life experience of two cultures.
Nowadays in Russia youth culture is growing and learning mostly from the west, being influenced by it allot. Russian youth culture and my generation have always been influenced by other cultures from the west e.g. music, fashion, styles etc. If you look at good teen magazines, you can find a lot there which has been brought from other culture, I guess this is all because Russia just started to change after Soviet time, and youth culture is just starting to develop itself and needs something to look up to. Although it’s trying to bring its own culture as well, which I have noticed, because it is easy for me to see these changes, where I can compare it from what I see in UK.

I have been working on my original idea to create a brochure that will market a property and have set up a blog...

Any comments or feedback would be great, thanks!
*this project began to move very slowly due to difficulties communicating with the interior designer, and i wasn't sure if i'd have to abandon the idea, but its all running smoothly now and i've been able to get started!

I've noticed that nobody seems to be posting any comments on the brighter blog, which is a shame because it's our show. There are lots of good ideas being bandied around on there but the show committee won't know how to spend our dosh if we don't leave them any comments. Start posting guys!

Hasina Daniel - Bling Bling… not!!!
Highly talented up and coming music producer with influences such as Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, J Dilla, Madlib, Damien Rice, Alice & John Coltrane and the Beatles to name but a few. His musical focus is centred on Hip Hop / Nu-Jazz / Break-beat and Experimental beats.
The client believes that themes found in the lyrics and images of commercial Hip-Hop, such as the allure of wealth, fame, degradation of women and illicit activities, have had a major impact on the public’s perceptions of Hip-Hop culture, this has become the predominant representation of Hip-Hop culture today and as a result has had a negative influence on youth culture today. Hip-Hop has the power to educate, inform and empower today’s youth. He wants his work to reflect a positive aspect to this field.
Aim:
In response to the client’s views on the negative representation of Hip-Hop culture, my goal is to help facilitate, promote and preserve Hip-Hop’s original vision, though the development of his own work both lyrical and instrumental. I will create an identity for his music that is non-stereotypical, in order to highlight the positive aspects of this music genre, with the aid of graphical responses to further establish the client, generate interest and draw in more potential clients.
Needs:
*Branding/ Promotional package
*Interviews/Documentary (Live bio instead of the written format, to go on myspace)
*Re-design myspace
*Visuals to illustrate music
*Photo Shoot
*T-shirt designs (generate interest)
I don’t intend on trying to revolutionize society’s perception of the Hip-Hop culture, but to illustrate an alternative response to this genre and in doing so demonstrate a different approach that can still have a positive outcome to a subject with negative public representations.
Feedback would be appreciated, as i realise this is completely different to my Juice Bar idea further down.

Hi, i know that haven't been writing for a long time.
So,i have been thinking about people's personalities, who they really are and how sometimes you want to be a different person in front of a new group of people. Become somebody else, may be somebody better or more interesting or just somebody different.
So, i was thinking to create a guide with full information about different characters and interests. For example, you want to pretend to be a model, so from the guide you will get information how to pretend to be one. The places they go, the language they speak and all the other information so you can easily fake it. I think that sometimes it can be real fun just for a little while to pretend to be somebody else.

Christine's blog...

Hi guys, hope everyone's cool. I've decided to set up my own blog; it sems a little unfair to hog this blog as i got lots of visuals, and it would mean everyone having to scroll down for an eternity to look at anyone elses. If you're deluded enough to want to see it, i'm at:
http://christine-moloney.blogspot.com/
I will still post here, but will limit visuals. I've decided to focus on the points Geoff raised as a sort of 'campaign', the sort of thing that could be included with any art colleges open days/ attendance at Ucas fairs etc, and distributed along with with prospectuses/information etc.

p.s. Ravi, if you're reading this, could you send me that link? Cheers!

Alex Kirmitsis - Web Design Exploration (B)
This post is for further clarification regarding my FMP idea about designing 3 websites for professional clients in Cyprus (International Brands).
a. An important aspect I have to make clear is that the companies I’m collaborating with, do not have existing websites, besides one (Kirmico LTD, representing the Kyocera printers), and even that one is interested in modifying it.
b. The websites will not be super complex. I am certainly not a web design expert but the task in front of me is definitely within my reach. The projects will be focused on good design and layout rather than on complex coding like, online ordering, members area, etc. I will try my best to meet my customer’s expectations, which I know for a fact does not include compound coding.
c. All customers are Cypriot entrepreneurs with their own company who want a new, fresh and modern website for their local company, selling, among others things, products of international brands. This I think, is the key that makes this project interesting. That is being said to justify that I will not be attempting to create or recreate websites inspired by the international brands web design (ESPRIT, Kyocera, etc) or anything similar, but sites for 3 independent, well known, Cypriot enterprises who are interested in promoting their businesses.
d. I will be leaving for Cyprus on Sunday 25 March and staying for a week solely to meet with my clients, discuss this brief in full, and collect all the data I will need to execute this project.

Paul's Boutique
I have just received an email from Paul (the man behind the brand) and he said he was really impressed with my work! I then spoke to him on the phone and he sounded enthusiastic about my ideas for posters&graphics, etc, he said they are expanding the brand with not only womens wear but mens and childrens too.
I have started to generate design ideas that can be used towards posters, swing tags, clothes and more and will show them to him when I have more. On top of it all he sounded like a really cool guy! Really excited!

Chelle meets Fergie!

Last night I went to a recording of Transmission on channel 4 with T-Mobile hosted by Steve Jones and Lauren Laverne. Guests consisted of Peaches Geldof (who was a right stuck up little...) Bez, who won celebrity Big Brother (he was hilarious!) someone off Shameless (I don't watch it), Mark Ronson (who DJ'd at Tom Cruise's wedding), Bright Eyes, The Twang, another band I can't remember and O MY GOD FERGIE from Black Eyed Peas, who sang her new song GLAMOROUS!!!!!!!!!
And I managed to speak to her when she came off from her performance (only small talk)- she is stunning but tiny in real life! Smaller than me! Anyway, the reason I am posting this is because I should be on tele either this Friday night, or next. I think it is on at 10.30pm. I pushed my way to the front of everything so I should be on there, and on the interviews on the couch I was bang in the middle so look out for me. Also I am going to the Eurovision show on Saturday so look out for me then too.
Hope all well x

Mary's Boutique update
I spoke to Paul's Boutique earlier today and after asking me to email my work to them, they've asked me to generate some ideas and proposals for them. This is what I aim to do for a good few days. I will produce designs that will possibly be applied to a number of things in order to increase cutomers' awareness of the brand.
This may include a catalogue, in-store graphics (may have to discuss with Topshop/Selfridges), perhaps a magazine spread in a fashion mag...? (I have never seen Pauls Boutique stuff shown in any magazine... hhmmm...). One of the directors that I spoke to, Emma Minford, has also mentioned brainstorming some designs for badges to go on clothes, which I will happily do also.
So next step for me is to show them what I want to do. The only guidelines Emma gave me is to try and keep the Pauls Boutique look, which is feminine, but a bit rocky/punky/funky. I think this will go well with what I want to work with.

Bio Board®
Our world has limited resources. The population is growing and people need more than before. We are taking from our world and not giving enough back. This product will reverse this negative cycle and help to increase positive life.
Recycling will only ever restore part of what we take away. Bio Board® can still be recycled, but it can do much more than this and actually help to create new life.
Materials such as biodegradable toilet rolls and tissue boxes can be coated in a non-toxic fertilizer. When people have finished using them, the cardboard can be recycled or even better, it can be put into the ground to be a fertilizer for new plants, trees and crops to grow.
Such a useful double purpose suggests many images for advertising the product. Flowering plants could have a toilet roll as their stem. Instead of flower boxes in front of houses there could be flower tissue-boxes.

new concept- Stephanie
It has been a craze for several years already in Asia (Thailand, Japan,..) and is becoming increasingly popular over here in Europe : nail art design, which vary from simple designs to outrageous ones, whether it's crystals on nails, brand name logos painted on, pictures transferred onto nails,...) I want to explore this area so i went to Nails Inc (a popular nail bar chain in the UK. They have a fun, quirky concept to the typical ¨boring¨ nail salons so i thought it'd be appropriate to work with them)
I asked if they were interested for me to design a nail art book for them so that they could use it with their clients. To this day, they don't have a ¨catalogue¨ which means that the customer can't really see what Nails Inc has to offer.
The girls at the South Molton Street store told me to come back this coming Friday where the store's manager will be in so i could talk to her.
Waiting impatiently for friday!

jerrome Brown FMP- search for a wall
So today i scouted throughout Chelsea for an appropriate wall for my project. I didnt really find anywhere suitable and may have to find another solution to painting on an actual wall.

This is the most obvious wall which leads to the workshops from the triangle space. It would be beautiful however the wall is too low, not much can be done.

These two walls are behind the triangle space. These walls fit a much more desired scale and there is enough space to record the paintings. however the problems with these are that a) they lead to and are within the garden(right now there is a No Entry sign up) so this maybe area that the college may not want to be trampled all over. And b) its position is hidden from the triangle space so can easily be missed.

NOW this particular wall(the white one alongside the wall behind the arches) made me dribble!! i close my eyes and saw scenes of beautiful letters curving and bendin around such smooth surfaces..caressing the architecture, letterforms gliding from behind the pillars to the huge open space like doves!! the only problem i have with this wall is that people may get in the way of the recording(the college may have other concerns).
These have been the only walls i've seen that would somehow fit the requirements needed for space. Im not too sure where to go from here... another solution would be to put boards up for the following 14 weeks. Places I have considered to be reaonable places have been along the recycling bins, along the wall infront of the beautiful bright white 'un, or the greatest,
most satisfying ppostion along the actual triangle space( dribble some more)!!

The only problem I have with resorting to boards it that it may make the project feel temporary. The whole idea of a wall of fame is that it is permanent and indelible, boards can be taken away.
Talking to a few writers about my project a few responses have been "IM THERE..", "OHHHH HELL YEAH", and "IM SALIVATING"

Hasina Daniel - Juiced
Brief:
As Britain is becoming the fattest country within Europe. The debate of healthy eating has provoked many thoughts and campaigns through the nation. ‘Juices take the fizz out of cola’ Metro 7th March 07.
I have been given the opportunity to create the branding identity for a potential Juice Bar, which is aiming to open in the summer.
The outcome of this project will help to promote awareness of ‘Juiced’ and generate a brand interest, which would be recognised as a well established household name, a place where individuals congregate to unwind, as the client is hoping to open up a chain of shops.
Potential names:
Juiced, Juiced Solutions
Motivation
I have always been interested in the healthy eating debate and also at some point in my life I would like to own my own business; I feel this project would give me an informative insight as to what the graphical process for doing so would be.
Aim
To create a vibrant, memorable brand identity (the next Starbucks?). Test whether good graphics plays an important role in attracting interest from potential customers into the establishment.
Is there a system to graphically promote healthy eating commercially without all the common clichés?
What I will produce
Name
Signage
Stationery – Business Cards/Letterheads
Logo
Slogan
Posters
Possible website design
Marketing (help promote awareness of the brand to generate interest.)
Promotion
Also after seeing some of my work, I have also been asked to design some surface designs for the interior.
Feedback appreciated

To create a vibrant, memorable brand identity (the next Starbucks?). Test whether good graphics plays an important role in attracting interest from potential customers into the establishment.
Is there a system to graphically promote healthy eating commercially without all the common clichés?
What I will produce
Name
Signage
Stationery – Business Cards/Letterheads
Logo
Slogan
Posters
Possible website design
Marketing (help promote awareness of the brand to generate interest.)
Promotion
Also after seeing some of my work, I have also been asked to design some surface designs for the interior.
Feedback appreciated

Yep, here i go again! After a bit of a think on Geoff's comments on education and industry, and a bit of research, there seems to be a widespread view that industry professionals don't involve themselves too much at primary and secondary school level. From what i've read, this has a detrimental effect on young designers as they are not exposed to visual language early enough, and are not encouraged to think out of the box, which of course can have beneficial effects on other aspects of learning, not just the graphic arts.
So what i propose for my FMP is this:
'Twin' Graphic designers/agencies with their local school (in much the same way as towns/villages do with their counterparts in other countries). This way, designers have direct involvement with the next generation, instead of just moaning. I propose to send a covering letter to all would be participents, followed by an information/promotional package a few days later. I would then follow this up with a visit to all concerned. I would also work on the local education authority and try and get them interested. Wouldn't it be cool if this was nationwide? Every school in the country twinned with a designer/agency!
This idea is still abit fresh in my mind so haven't worked it all out yet, so i could really do with some feedback on this.

Chris Collicott - Anyone with a bike
here goes...
Web / print system that allows people to upload their favourite cycle routes and ride other peoples'.
The system would allow people access to many peoples’ favourite rides across all kinds of cycling – commuting, racing, mountain biking, bmx, etc. They would be able to say why a route is good, if it suitable for kids, how long it is, upload photos and so on.
The site would consist of an interactive streetmap of London, allowing users to view everything cycling by effectively turning layers on and off – cycle shops, best snackeries, best place to park your bike, best cheeky shortcuts, etc.
There will also be a print area to the project, by producing maps which would be made for drawing routes on, and then sharing with others. The maps could be personalised and sent to each person or they could be printed at home.
As far as I can tell nothing like it exists, but it might be similar to runlondon. TFL’s cycle maps are useful, but in terms of showing whole routes it is fairly limited, and has no personal input – cyclists opinions can be shared and would be more detailed and useful than just a map – more of a community effort.
* The aim of this project is to make finding good, enjoyable cycling routes easy and accessible to anyone interested.
(this is independent of the cycling club project)
any thoughts would be great!

Christine: graphic design - the preserve of the young?
I've decided to copy and paste a thought i had here, as my last post is a long way down; not sure if people are reading past a certain point. Here goes:
It would also seem that the design world itself is perpetuated by bright young things (i remember Geoff saying that they always asked what people looked like before they would interview them), which begs the question, if a 50 year old graduating student and a 21 year old with the same skills applied for a job within a design agency, who would be more likely to be offered the job? Would be interesting to call tons of agencies and tell them i'm a 21 year old graduating student of Chelsea and ask for an interview; then do the same thing telling them i'm 50. Wonder what the response would be? Would be cool to send my Mum in undercover too and see the reaction she gets!
I know this is naughty, but a project exposing nationwide industry ageism would be interesting; graphic outcomes could be an expose newspaper, with a free pull out map detailing the areas in the design world that don't welcome the over 30/40/50's.

Juliana Davies - More Updates!
Just got off the phone with Georgia. We are having a meeting on Friday at 4pm - after her studio session where i am also attentding in order to meet with the band. i am thinking of taking my camera in order to take some photos to start testing where and how i will insert the band on the music promo and CD cover, etc...
She asked me for this meeting to take some of my work and ideas. She also said that for the music promo she thinks "Life on Mars" is probably the song she wants to prmote her album, which for me is GREAT because I love that song and I think she sings it beautifully!
i will be posting very soon examples of my ideas on the my blog, if you guys could give me your opinion that would be great!
Last thing: does anyone know those "cut-outs" that you can make on paper and then make a "pop-up" out of it? I'm not sure i'm expressing myself correctly, but does anyone know what I mean?

From Russia with Love - Karina
All of my previous ideas were not approved, so now I’m going to try and present another idea, which is also about my home country. This is very important to me because for my Final Major Project I would really like to do something personal and valuable to me, to be able to use as part of my cultural difference in the future.
Here I was looking at the assessment criteria, and setting the aims:
What is the idea?
• Presentation of my culture into different environment
by braking the traditional rules of visual forms e.g. holiday pictures, postcards
• Looking at my culture from different point of view
• Documenting, and using raw material.
To help you to understand what I mean, I’ll try to explain: during spring break I am planning to see and document my country and its traditions, for a foreign culture to see it. But the main idea and what I like about it is that I am going to present the material, different from what we all used to see about other foreign cultures. I want to try to document my country as it’s not usually seen on postcards and pretty pictures, but its real form, good and bad sides, like I see it sometimes, sort of like being on a journalist mission. I am not planning on discouraging it in any way, but just to let the audience see its real picture.
If my idea is approved, I am planning on going to St Petersburg (Russian second capital) and documenting aspects of culture there, documenting negative as well as positive sides. (I am also very keen on using photography as my collective tool). My next step after that will be Moscow.
Outcome: everything which is associated with visual cultural representations, like postcards, for example, photo snaps etc will be used as form through which to present my overall material, in a way to show the cultural difference, its inner beauty and regrets.

Thought out our generation, we see a lot of development on technology, for example cassette tape, CDMA phone, typewriter, game boy were once the most popular gadgets in their time, but as technology developed, those things are no longer being use any more, Mp3 has over taken cassette tape, mobile phone network today doesn’t cover CDMA phone anymore due to the introduction of Sim card technology in mobile phone, computer and printer are much widely use than typewriter, and game boy is too out of date for consumer to buy. All those things were once very important to us but now they are rarely used/seen in our world now days! It seems like ages since the birth of those technologies, but it was only 20 years ago! Our generation is developing so fast and people don’t realize that those things were the beginning of our technological world. It is similar to the beginning of human kind.
For the past decades we have been trying to find out more information about the past, and we actually get those historical information by discovering fossil, then we predict what those fossils are and how it was changed.
I am aiming to collect as many of those ex-popular gadgets as possible, than reproduce or make them to fossil alike, so those gadgets will become the evidences of our history, then people can look at those fossil-objects in a different point of view instead of old gadget which has no meaning to this world anymore!
Possibly once those object are made, they can be view in a gallery or in the national history museum…

Juliana Davies - Updates!
Hey guys! new updates on my blog! As everyone may imagine, this past two weeks were crazy due to D&AD - everything about making a movie takes long hours! But I posted some research I feel is relevant and I spoke to Georgia and arranged a formal meeting this week, probably on Thursday, to finally decide what music will be used to promote her new album. But from our past conversations she has been very liberal in letting me be as creative as I want and open to everything I propose to her! Which sounds VERY exciting!

Tim Keay FMP - Digital Aesthetic -
I am very interested in creating a film based around the idea of the 'digital aesthetic'... the fact that almost anyone can record and publish video with modern digital technology.
To explore this further I intend to direct and produce a piece of moving image work, made over the internet from 'user submitted' material, shot on mobile phones.
There have been (relatively low budget) films released over the internet (www.thisisnotalovesong.com springs to mind) and there is a surplus of footage shot on mobile phone - youtube and video blogging are both huge but lack structure and quality.
Is it possible to put the two together and make something that uses Youtube's ideal but has interest and... a point?
The project would require a basic website and online publicity (not a problem), offline publicity and participation (more problematic)
I have also been thinking about offline methods of display, and im interested in whats been termed 'projection bombing' - projecting moving image work onto buildings - bridging the gap between the online and offline. I very much like the idea of putting work produced by 'the public' back into both worlds.
Im meeting up with some guys who made camera phone moving image material for the watermans arts centre, to find out how their low resolution work translated onto the much bigger screen, their aesthetic etc etc.
Any comments, ideas and offers of contribution would be very much appreciated! Cheers

Updates to Aleister's project
Just uploaded my first marks on the entirely blank canvas that is Susie Burstein's branding... check out my blog! Been through many fonts and arrangements to arrive at something really simple in the end... any feedback I can get before I show it to the client will be most appreciated. The mock up products are just to show where the logo would be used and in no way indication of how I expect the finals to look!!
Awesome to see some new projects getting off the ground and also that some of the earlier approved projects are gaining momentum... Anna and Michelle currently rocking my socks with their blistering progress :-)

'Chelle' hosts charity event back in her local home town
If I am going to be famous I must do my bit for charity.
Running alongside my FMP is a ;James Bond' charity event I am organising for my local pub. An idea of mine is to use this as one of my methods of getting my name noticed. This will be done through all advertising by announcing the event is 'hosted by Chelle'. This will be seen on all posters, leaflets, newspapers, radio. People will think- Chelle? Who is that... Then they will see my website address and hopefully log on hence more publicity for me. For this event I worked with the manager to organise:
- an Aston Martin, a Rolls Royce and a Z4 to be outside the front
- celebrity guests, 'Jaws' from the actual film James Bond will be there along with 'Odd-Job' who stars in it too.
- photographers
- radio advertising
- local newspaper advertising
We have also organised a Charity Auction, prizes consist of
- P&O Cruise
- dinner for 2 at The Langham, London
- Adnams brewery tour and dinner
- golfing for 18 people
- beauty treatments
- a Z4 for the weekend test drive
- signed football shirts
- signed James Bond posters
Lots more to come!
Hopefully this will also demonstrate in my portfolio my skill for PR work which I am hoping to move into in the future. I have already designed all the graphics for this event and so the pub are willing to help my name become known by radio / media work that will be involved.
I will have photographs from the event to record the outcome. If you feel this does not relate to my FMP in anyway then let me know

Environmentally Graphic
The focus of my FMP is the relationship a designer has with the environment-both digitally and naturally. Graphics is a tangible form for communication, something you see, touch, interact with and take away with you, it is a narrative on society-its needs and its wants. My project looks to archive this narrative in an initially print based manner, focusing on the environmental crisis we currently face.
The project would be about connecting people, working together is far more effective then apart. The outcome would be in the format of a book with pages that transform into things you can use/interact with to aid the environment or to raise awareness/ make a social observation or comment about it. I want the outcome to be simplistic and clear but beautifully made and preciously put together as the environment is.
I would look to involve environmentally conscious practises as my critical mass to view my working progress such as the big ask, Howie's,etc.
To clarify:
-Aims to observe and utilise graphic responsibilty through its processes, to draw attention to environmental crisis.
-To display a range of skills through the book from print to layout, product design etc
-Indicate a vocational area-ethical graphics/charities etc
-To produce a beautiful interactive book that uses print, paper craft, photography, illustration etc
Alex Kirmitsis - Web Design Exploration
Comments VERY VERY VERY much appreciated!!
Since the FMP is a great opportunity to promote the paths of graphic design that we are most interested to follow in the future, I would like to operate within the field of web design. I would also like to focus on the live market of Nicosia, Cyprus, since it is a market that I’m familiar of and easier for me to approach, as well as because it is a thriving and progressing market, since Cyprus’ inclusion in the European Union.
My aim will be to research and track down several companies, preferably ones that represent international brands, and design their websites. Some of them may already have existing, running websites, which I will attempt to re-design. The companies and enterprises I will select (or better, try to select) will be from various domains of the industry (fashion, music, medicine, property, sports etc), so that the project will have an interesting variety. All websites will have a similar and familiar layout, since my aim is to introduce my personal graphic touch in all the works so that they will appear balanced and in proportion when assembled and viewed together.
I have started researching and enquiring in the Cypriot market, anticipating to find worthwhile customers before I write this proposal. So far, I have found 3 companies that agreed to participate in this task. Fortunately, all of them from different industries.
1. Kirmico Ltd. is the official representative of the KYOCERA printers in Cyprus, also responsible for the importing and distributing of scanners, faxes, shredders and other office machines.
2. ESPRIT. The famous worldwide clothing brand.
3. Deep Horizons Recordings. The first electronic/dance production studio in Cyprus with a 7-year experience in house music production and DJing.
The project will be a live brief since the constructed websites will be published on the net and will be running normally. I will endeavour to overall find at least 4 or 5 different companies ranging from as much types of business as possible to create my collection of websites.
14 weeks will be just fine.

Pedro Proenca Final Project
Lula Magazine Font

I will be redesigning the font Kursivschrift Stehende for the exclusive use of Lula Magazine. Following the brief set by the magazine´s creative director, Becky Smith, I will be working on improving the way letters flow into each other, creating ligatures and redesigning some characters for improved legibilty and aesthetic. If sucessful, my contribution will be credited in the next issue of Lula.

In case this project doesn’t develop into something more substantial, I would like to propose another project.
Book Project
I would like to do an information mapping exercise based on the ‘modern artists monographs’ section at the Chelsea college library. I would be approaching the collection from a quantitative perspective (i.e. the amount of books per artist, the shelf space occupied per book/artist). Taking scale into acount, I would produce a book in which each artist would be granted space in its pages proportional to the number of centimeters of shelfspace he occupies , basically flattening the 3D space of library into the bidimensional surface of the page.
This can seem quite a simple exercise, but I think that the ambiguity of the outcome can be thought provoking, and whilst being simple, subtly refer to the wider realm of culture ( the obsessiveness that can be associated with repetitive work tasks – I am a shelver at the library -, the human necessity to hierarchize even the most subjective things, like measuring artistic merit by the centimeter ).
It would provide me with the opportunity to produce a beautiful book related to the ´cultural field´in which I am interested.
Thanks for your comments!

Chris Collicott - Design Community
Working from the idea that design does not exist in isolation, one interpretation of contemporary graphics is that creativity is formed around community and communication: the notion that ideas are formed through a flow of information, people and opinions, and that graphic design is one form of output.
The way designers portray themselves forms an essential part of how the creative community works and evolves. Graphic design provides a platform for promotion in all kinds of ways, but the way that people want to be perceived forms the basis for the community.
This concept would take the project in the direction of a collaboration to discover how creative people would like to be perceived, in order to see how the graphic community interacts and communicates with itself, and therefore how it evolves.
I’m not entirely sure what form the project will take, but I am starting in the direction of a collection of pieces of graphics by other creative people which I will then arrange to present the multi-faceted frontage of graphic design.
thanks

Tara Hughes - BRIEF outline!
Ok that first blog is very long and detailed so here is the outline of my project put very simply!;
-Exploring the printed media's fascination with schadenfreude, by collecting cuttings from 1 month's worth of news.
-Designing their graphic, blocked shapes into 3 posters colour categorised by; comedy, jealsousy and justice.
-Placed in a photographic gallery space for visitors to participate in choosing to witness visually one of the stories by means of basic moving image.
-Their reactions would be recorded photographically to be exhibited back into the space and as new material for short stop-frame films.
I hope this is much clearer!
Feedback appreciated.

Ok, I appreciate this is a long blog but I’ve tried to re-work my existing idea to cover the criteria and so have detailed the whole process of the project.
It’s not waffle, I promise!
I’ve kept with my same theme, as it’s something I’m really enthusiastic in exploring. The problem was communicating the idea graphically and fulfilling my aim in carrying out a live whilst uncommercial project.
Look/Don’t Look
My proposal is to highlight the printed media’s fascination with other people’s misfortunes, in a communicative graphic format that also measures influence and consequent reactions.
The aim is to collect every printed instance of schadenfreude found in 1 tabloid newspaper, 1 broadsheet and 1 trashy magazine over a period of 1 month. This means a range of ‘misfortunes’ affecting ordinary folk, politicians and celebs can be gathered.
Three posters would be designed from the shapes of these cuttings categorised into; Comedy, Jealousy and Justice and printed onto newsprint in Cyan, Magenta and Yellow for each. Postcards could be produced with each shape printed and the actual text and source on the reverse.
The content of the cuttings will also be translated into illustrated strips to be inserted into a constructed moving image device (zoetrope).
To question whether the media encourages/influences us into feeling schadenfreude, these posters of the collated news and the visual tool would be placed at 'Viewfinder Photography Gallery' in Greenwich where visitors would be asked to participate in choosing a category and shape, then given the corresponding postcard to read the salacious, comedic, or perhaps political story. They would then be offered the chance to view that news story play out simply in the form of basic moving image.
What I’m really interested in capturing, is the reactions of people experiencing schadenfreude whether it be with smirks, opened eyes, shocked expressions - if you like it’s the ‘physical manifestation of a private emotion’. I would record these reactions photographically with a view to exhibiting the images back into the gallery space from which they were sourced.
Ultimately, I’d like this imagery to form new content for the zoetrope or possible short stop-frame films to be displayed at the show where visitors would be watching another’s experience of schadenfreude without knowledge of the stimulus.
I recognise that the project relies heavily upon public participation, which is a risk, but as the gallery is located in a busy area with many tourists and students, it shouldn’t be too hard to gain the responses needed.
I feel this project reflects my interest in thought-provoking print based graphics, raising debate on social issues, whilst demonstrating skills in collaboration, print and photography.
Also a substantial body of work can be produced.

Having reconsidered my original concept I have re-aligned a more established outcome.
The aim of this project is to reach different audiences through design, being these audiences professional typographers/designers.
Outcome:
-Four different typefaces. I will target different magazines/studios/designers in order to try to generate any kind of interest and, as a result, get some comments out of them.
-Four A2 posters showing each of the typefaces in creative application. The theme will be comments from professional typographers/designers.
-Professional feedback.
When I have the outcome sorted I'll contact those typographers/designers that could be interested in using it (rather fonts or posters) or at least to give any kind of feedback.
The feedback should demonstrate if the different designs reach different audiences.

Alex Woodcocks music promotions- what d'ya think?
The indie rock band haunts have a very strong almost theatrical approach to their visual representation, and as such is an integral part of the bands package. I will be doing a live brief designing all the visuals for the forthcoming campaign. This will include the first single artwork, which is set as a limited edition run of 500 vinyl, with high production values and a good budget. Also I will be designing the merchandise which will be sold on their uk tour in support of this release. On top of this I will be looking to design the next following single art work, as well as photoshoots, e-cards websites and perhaps even video. All aspects of this campaign must all tie in together and work cohesively as one theme. All items are set for a full uk release in shops.
This is a few little bits and bobs i been messing around with, to be treated more as a mood board rather than an indication to final projects, but hopefully it might coax out a bit of feedback from somewhere.
I gave the bands myspace a brief overhall, althought i just made it black but i will be making further progress on that as time goes buy. This fitness (or not) can be witnessed atttttttt

You can have a little look about and feast your ears on some bangin choons....So to speak.
Also if your not at a disposition to flashing lights and you got a thing for "lo-fi" you can view the holding page for the website i made
The HAUNTS Webpage
This is just a graphic montage for promotional use, just to get a few feelers out fo the graphic style or presentation
This is a photo shoot that ive art directed with the band, i have the same studio at my disposal for free to do another couple of shoots. For this i got all the props and built the set using fake walls ect.

Just a few logos ive been messing around with.... need much more work.

This is an example of the style of pop i intend to use in the packaging of the gatefold vinyl, although i am awaiting costing production Vs the budget. (obviously to presented in a different graphical style)

Kanika Akinshegun- Promoting a Fashion Designer
Idea:
Glitz, glamour and image shape a large part of society today. Ceremonies which praise and acknowledge celebrities work also largely focuses on what they wear and how they present themselves. Fashion and graphics work alongside each other in terms of promotion. To prove how good graphics can promote great fashion and draw extra attention I shall embark on promoting an up and coming fashion designer who shall appear in a fashion show called "I would like to thank..." held at the end of May. The designer’s pieces are based on the theme of the 'Oscars'
Aims:
To produce promotional material for the designer such as:
-Contact cards
-Posters
-website
-Look book of the designer's work which entails photographing on location.
-packaging for Promotional giveaway at the end of the show
Along side this I shall contact magazines to help platform her work
The outcome should help to establish the designer and draw in potential clients.

I'm working with South Wales independent Record Label, Poisoned Whiskey Records. The Brief is to find solutions open to contribution from people surrounding the music scene in South Wales as well as promote the actual bands themselves. The aim is to encourage the involvement of local photographers, journalists, writers, designers and more involved to contribute work. In creating an outlet for those surrounding the scene as well as the bands then we aim to create an outlet for the creative of South Wales who don’t always get a chance.
From this, the aim is to continue to push the design through to the more mundane aspects of the label to give the label design continuity.
• Posters/Flyers/Stickers
• Merchandise
• Press Packs
• Web Virals
There may also be the opportunity to make a brief DVD presentation and work on the next Poisoned Whiskey Records release.

Oliver Simpson: VJ stock imagery
i am attracted by the relatively recent phenomenon of VJing, i.e. manipulating and projecting visuals to compliment live music. In general, i see a lot of rather crude imagery used for this purpose, and i think that VJs are in need of quality material. I will be producing a set of moving image clips which will be available for public use. Conscious that mainstream contemporary dance music is largely homogenous in its sound, i will create a diverse range of imagery in reaction to this. Clips will be designed to work as layers, making it possible to build complex visual structures. I will incorporate live action footage, animation (possibly some 3D work) and still photography, as well as other graphic elements including typography, in order to compile a wealth of imagery. I intend for this material to be used for a live event and will be in contact with professional VJs with whom i can engage.
Mary's Boutique
I have recently contacted one of my favourite brands - Paul's Boutique and enquired about producing a set of design work for them, as apart from their clothing, they do not appear to have any... But, having no graphic representation - tangible or even internet based Paul's Boutique clothing and accessories are highly desirable, selling in both Topshop & Selfridges. Will the introduction of graphic design improve the brand's popularity, its sense of identity and customer experience??
I have been asked to contact them early next week when Paul will be around and we can discuss the matters further. I'm really excited, as I think if they give me a big creative scope I will really enjoy the project. When I know more details I will let y'all know!

So after meeting Geff, the idea for my FMP has been resolved. I will be taking on the role as the curator of a legal Wall of Fame for Chelsea. For fourteen weeks I will be organising numerous graffiti writers from as far and wide as possible to come down and paint an allocated wall, each time filming the productions in order to display at the Final Show. At the end of the fourteen weeks a possible round up is for me to paint the wall myself getting three writers to judge whether I have learnt anything above my own abilities.
The aim of this project is to bring the graffiti writers out of the shadows and to display their creativity. This also brings the recognition of the art form to Chelsea.

Christine - New post
Hi guys, deleted my other posts to tidy things up a bit! Had a quick word with Geoff today concerning my FMP and future career ambitions (i want to teach art and design in secondary school) and tailoring my FMP to that. So here are some thoughts relating to that:
Graphic design in schools; is it encouraged?
Do parents encourage it?
General perceptions, likely to lead to a proper job?
Myths/preconceptions
Wondering how to tailor something around this, especially as it must have 'substantial use and purpose'. Does this mean that it has to be live, i.e, a live client? Was thinking of contacting dept education, connexions service etc, and see just what they give out when confronted with a teenager who expresses a desire to work in this field. Problem is, i don't want to be stuck doing leaflets etc, and certainly don't want to be doing something that might not even be used, which wouldn't do me any favours. Was also thinking of all the things i would have to say to a despairing parent after discovering their child had chosen graphic design as a career path; maybe the 'A-Z' of graphic design jobs, a book to allay all fears. Not sure if this is a bit silly though. Would going into the classroom be a better idea? Soz, in a bit of a pickle here, guess i'm wondering just how live, tangible and useful this should be!

Hey guys, sorry to scare you with the pic but just letting you know I had my photo shoot and photos on my personal blog will soon be there to view (if you dare!). Also I went to Harrods today to hand-deliver my letter from Geoff and they are still very interested in letting me sit in a window. Now I have my foot in the door I am intrigued as to if some of you would be interested in being in the window with me for some pictures? If so let me know. Also I was told by the director of marketing I was very persistant and they like that so there is a good tip for you.
I am meeting with a creative director within a company called Sectorlite next week to brainstorm more possibilities for my project and to perhaps help me with advertising on billboards.
Hope you are all well x

Urban discovery
Ask anyone the important monuments in London and it is either ‘Trafalgar square’ or ‘Buckingham palace’. However London is full of lots of odd details that we as Londoners are not aware of.
My idea is to produce some sort of documentation for the local Londoner who does not realise what they have at their doorstep. (E.g. has anyone heard of the camel corps?)
I will need to create an Accompaniment to an exciting new urban discovery
Aim
Travel through London and explore and document all the interesting odd details I came across.
Ask locals what they find interesting/important in their community
Research into the history of the areas I come across.
(While I understand I cannot travel the whole of London in 14 weeks I do aim to go as further as I can. I will travel through all the boroughs in London and find the odd details in each borough so that in case one cannot travel on a long journey across the capital, they an exciting discovery locally)

Final Project - Karina

Hello everyone! I have posted my idea before about exploring Russian graphic design. My idea is to see how it is developing at the moment, and compare it to the British graphic design industry. I have already sent an email to Academy of Russian graphic design, where I explained my interest in what they are doing and asked them for some information. And now it is a big concern for me that this project is very broad, so I seriously need to narrow it down and think about the outcome. I would really like to work on this project, because I have a strong interest in it, and would like to know more about it.
So to narrow it down…
For my Final Project I’m going to explore the notion of Russian agitation posters, mostly during Soviet time, I’m particular interested in this because agitation posters were the foundation of Russian graphics.
Outcome:
Produce my own agitation posters, using the style and conception of traditional Soviet agitation posters. The posters will reflect the perception and the mood of our modern society and community exertion.
Aims:
• Research the history of graphic design in other culture
• Study the notion of Soviet poster
• Examine the structure, context, layout and overall design
• Produce my own poster, based on research, giving it a certain disposition.
Aimee- Glastonbury festival promo
Brief:
To design the promotional package for Glastonbury festival 2007, with reference to the going "back to basics" theme and intent this year.
The success of Glastonbury has meant that the advertising of it hasn't received a great deal of attention in recent years. The posters are basic, infused with too much colour and the design is repeated year after year. Charming as the posters are, the brand of Glastonbury is one people don't remember.
Motivation:
To create a visual identity that is refreshing and celebratory, whilst maintining the spirit and essence of the event.
To test the creative bounderies within a live brief for a worldwide established festival, which will also be an exercise to see the parallels of what I would produce, against those of the inhouse designer. This will include:
Posters
Adverts
Area Laminates:Performer, staff, guest, resident, camping
Vehicle passes
Entry tickets
Programmes
Glastonbury merchandise: t-shirts, wellies, hats, waterproofs
Here are some examples of previous years posters and current website:
