With July the 1st coming up, putting an end on smoking in public places, there is a risk of a commercial and social damage that may be done by the ban. I wonder if a project could stem from this, the fact that 'social smoking' will no longer exist, how hard smokers will find not being able to enjoy one with a beverage and general pros & cons.
2nd idea: Not sure about this one as it may involve celebrities and nothing can really beat Michelle's project.
I've always liked the idea of d-list celebrities, how vain or potentially interesting they can seem. I have thought of contacting celebrity agents and generate a live project from them based on someone as silly as Jack Tweedy (Jade Goody's boyfriend). Not sure what the outcome may be at this stage yet.

I like the idea of the death of the cigarette-it suggests the cigarette as some kind of icon-personfied almost. it is quite a current topic as well. Is there something more you could do with it though other then simply looking at pro's and cons? maybe a futuristic mock up of a society without smoking, the perils of withdrawral symptoms etc?
Looking at simply pros & cons is just a starting point, yes. I think society can be seen as frustrated but of course more healthy once the ban is activated (which is kind of weird).
Can this ban be seen as one of limitations/restrictions of 'free will'? Its interesting how over the past few years society is 'forced' to do things such as recycle things.
Futuristic mock up of society sounds interesting, but i guess i need to think of a twist that will make these ideas into a project. Hmmmm...
Also maybe you could focus on the fact that smoking is a social activity and in an ever increasing isolating society will the banning of cigarettes mean a decline in social activity?
Maybe the project could be looking at the life of a cigarette?-its legacy, what it introduced, what it leaves behind-tongue in cheek?
If you go to Ireland I reckon you'll find that despite the ban, social smoking is still going strong - people just drink outside the pub instead of inside it.
I talked to a LCC advertising grad this afternoon actually who did a campaign on the ban and decided to take the line that freedom of choice has now been removed from us. I thought in all honesty it was a slightly weak project with little to say other than that some people like smoking. Admittedly, as a bit of a smocial soaker myself I see the point, but do you want it to be your 14-week FMP?
the smoking thing has been done a lot recently, but with the bans coming into force it has kinda become a non-issue.
it seems the only thing you can say on the subject is people like to smoke, and then have a rant about it.
Yeah, you are all right, unless I put a significant twist or something else into it - it'l work otherwise Its not worth pushing. Thank you 4 the comments everyone!
Hey Mary, might get you to be in Harrods with me seeing as you wrote some lovely stuff on my blog!
Mind you I'm supposed to be promoting myself and people will be asking me to get out the way so they can see you!!
Any more ideas on where to go with this project?
I am really stuck for ideas but your latest entry sounds like great fun!
Michelle
