East is West - Ravi

Discussions with GTS and I think I've got a worthwhile proposal. I intend to produce a painted Bollywood hoarding (see the amazing historic examples above, spot the modern one?) to reflect India’s fading traditions. The poster shall utilise the age-old hoarding technique as to preserve identity and authenticity whilst parodying and subversing classic Bollywood to expose all the ‘drama’ and changes experienced in a youth-orientated India. This shall thus encapsulate many notions of preserving identity, Bollywood as an everlasting archive of India, digital & global takeover, whilst revealing the effects of contemporary India as seen through an already ‘westernised’ British Asian perspective.

A series of A1 posters each representing a different theme e.g. sex & marriage, shopping & globalisation, youth demand etc, may also be produced. Elements of each poster shall then be brought together in the billboard size hoarding, much like the way a Bollywood poster campaign is created. The billboard hoarding will take first priority and shall hopefully be sourced and commissioned from genuine film artists in India. Comments and feedback much appreciated!

This sounds far more like you, Rav. Its something that you have direct experience of and will also utilize your hand drawing/crafting skills to the maximum, which I've always found to be your greatest strength.

Would you have to hand render all the type for authenticity as well? Also, would it enhance your brief to display them somewhere 'live'?

I intend to have them hand painted by the proffesionals in India - it's a dying craft due to digital printing, which is part of the reason for doing so, preserving identity. I have considered displaying them live after the project, idealy at the Rich Mix in Bethnal Green but this shall be looked into after production. Cheers Rav.

Nice one Rav you've got it! Sounds good. I think displaying them live is definitely something that strengthens the idea.

Love the irony in outsourcing your final project and getting it made in India!

I think you've got it Ravi. From all angles I think it's a project that reflects your personality and interests as well as displaying your talents. As Joanne says, going full circle and getting the paintings hand-crafted in India is a fantastic end to it all. Good-luck!

Good...you're up and running! Glad that both mine and Frank's comments concur.
