Subtraction

I would like to produce an experimental piece of graphics, based around the key idea of subtraction. I will explore formal aspects like structure, scale and tactility to create a printed object- not sure if it will be a book exactly but i would like to work within the confines of pages and layout- that addresses notions of maximalism and minimalism in graphic design (the ornamental, decorative, and cluttered and the bare, straightforward and essential).

Flea markets, as highly graphic places, chaotic and seemingly undesigned in nature would supply the raw material for the book, whilst locating the project within contemporary visual culture. A selected number of images of local markets and of retrieved objects will be the basis for experimentation. The vernacular visual language of these can refer not only to the designer’s role as cultural mediator within both high and low culture, but also to designers fascination with the beauty of the spontaneous and undesigned, that is frequently coupled with the contradictory urge to order and plan. .

This project would allow me to produce a beautiful piece of print whilst pushing my vocational interests.

Any comments very much appreciated!

i don't really understand your concept... is it just about scale? If so, then don't you think that there are enough projects already focussing on this?

Maybe I wasnt too clear. I'll try to work on making the post clearer. When I mention scale, I'm referring to graphic design elements like layout, type and image and not to the dimension of the object/book.

Hi teresa,
I like the idea of substraction and maximalism and minimalism in design.
Do you know who would it be for? I think your idea can really generate a beautiful piece of graphics.

The part about a designers role in processing and 'translating' culture is really interesting as I think it's true that through our designing we create meaning through the different structures you are intending to explore.

We have approx 9 weeks remaining on this project and I have to say that I still find your description and motivation too complex in its narrative, too self-indulgent and still without a particular rational or purpose. Key themes of collecting and the venacular is not wholly original and has been done many times before. A review of objects is largely successful when the original user can be identified and is probably famous or better still infamous!

You are also in danger of continuing to demonstrate some lesse skills, (seen from you before):
indecision, over-confidence in the quality of an idea and work that lacks immediacy and quality.

You are aso up against your peers who are either well on their way to satisfying the needs of either a real client or are way7 up there in the realms of the experimental aesthetic!

Please get back to me once you have appraised these comments.

I've also been worried about the lack of focus of the project, and have been trying to find a sub-theme within Subtraction as graphic design that suits the criteria.
I will work on something else.
thanks,
