Highly talented up and coming music producer with influences such as Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, J Dilla, Madlib, Damien Rice, Alice & John Coltrane and the Beatles to name but a few. His musical focus is centred on Hip Hop / Nu-Jazz / Break-beat and Experimental beats.
The client believes that themes found in the lyrics and images of commercial Hip-Hop, such as the allure of wealth, fame, degradation of women and illicit activities, have had a major impact on the public’s perceptions of Hip-Hop culture, this has become the predominant representation of Hip-Hop culture today and as a result has had a negative influence on youth culture today. Hip-Hop has the power to educate, inform and empower today’s youth. He wants his work to reflect a positive aspect to this field.
Aim:
In response to the client’s views on the negative representation of Hip-Hop culture, my goal is to help facilitate, promote and preserve Hip-Hop’s original vision, though the development of his own work both lyrical and instrumental. I will create an identity for his music that is non-stereotypical, in order to highlight the positive aspects of this music genre, with the aid of graphical responses to further establish the client, generate interest and draw in more potential clients.
Needs:
*Branding/ Promotional package
*Interviews/Documentary (Live bio instead of the written format, to go on myspace)
*Re-design myspace
*Visuals to illustrate music
*Photo Shoot
*T-shirt designs (generate interest)
I don’t intend on trying to revolutionize society’s perception of the Hip-Hop culture, but to illustrate an alternative response to this genre and in doing so demonstrate a different approach that can still have a positive outcome to a subject with negative public representations.
Feedback would be appreciated, as i realise this is completely different to my Juice Bar idea further down.

Sounds good Hassie, but you didn't tell us who he is! Certainly sounds like a challenge, That music genre has recieved a bit of a battering in the press recently. Enjoy the Easter hols.

Yeah this sounds better Hassie, there isn't too much creative freedom when your client dictates that their branding image must be orange and have leaves on it!
Hi Hasina,
This sounds really interesting! The negative associations are defiantly whats mainly represented in the media. It would be nice to see a different approach to a genre that is so stereotypical. Your client sounds like he’s really passionate about this issue too. Like the diversity of his influences. Who is he?
really nice idea and oppertunity. im excited for you!! definitley would be good to see something that shows the artists personality and their approach to hip hop that will show a contrast fom the media representation. he sounds like he has really good influences and look forward to hearing his work and seeing your graphics.

Hi Guys,
Mister music producer likes to go by the name of Propa.
• Born in Boston, USA. Now resides in London – English accent.
• He has been producing music for 10 years.
• Worked with people both in the UK & US.
• Worked for New Avenues Youth Club, teaching Sound Engineering and Music Production.
• Preformed in show were Bobby Womack was present.
• Used to host and DJ at 87.7 Fm also recently done a slot about beat making.
Thanks for you comments guys, they’re really appreciated. This will be and exciting opportunity for me and defiantly a challenge. I’m a fan of underground Hip-Hop but not commercial Hip-Hop, although the issues surrounding it are defiantly something that I’m highly interested in.
Thanks again guys

bling bling...not lol
that title is funny. is this going to be more of a branding thing or just promoting him? i see you want to do a documentary/interview. wow!! How far are you in getting the info you need on him? this sounds very exciting. All the best
This sounds really interesting. Like the fact that promoting/ branding this guy has an underline issue. I'm trying to think of the imagery I’d used without using the obvious. I'm keen to see the graphics you’re going to come up with.
Defiantly prefer this to your juice bar idea.
Really like this idea the sub theme works well because i feel you are not trying to change hip-hop as it stands rather open the doors and peoples eyes to a different type of hip-hop.
cant w8 for your visuals!!
I feel this project has a bit of both elements. The branding would coincide with the non-stereotypical visuals used to represent him and his vision. The promoting side would be used to further establish the client, generate interest and draw in more potential paying clients, which is also something that the client needs. The documentary is more of a live biography with elements of the processes he goes to accomplish his outcomes. I chose to do this instead of the written format as Props (Propa) feels that written format of bios found on websites and myspace accounts are extremely one dimensional (boring). All the info on him has already been gathered, the next step is to put it all together.
Thanks for your comment guys, really appreciate it.

Project seemingly fine, it fulfills the majority of assessment criteria required. My chief reservations are as follows however:
Firstly, HIP HOP culture- orientated projects have been done repeatedly by gradute graphic design students. Secondly you will be jugded against the best artists and designers in the field. Thirdly you appear to be designing a largely decorative marketing package, rather than video, street-art and interactive work that is at the creative heart of the genre.
Lastly, is this project of real interest becuse yu wish to work in and for the music recording industries?

Hi Geoff,
I understand and appreciate your comments.
The sub-theme of this proposal has always been of interest to me, and is a subject matter that I have always wanted to address. I feel that exploring this through the work of a hip hop music producer is an avenue that I’m enthusiastic to explore, as I’m keen to progress my design career within the music industry.
In order to gain a wider knowledge and appreciation for the subject matter and to what is already on the market; I plan to use those artists and designers as inspiration rather than an obstacle.
I have decided to tweak the project outcomes to align more with the issues you have raised, regarding producing a largely decorative marketing package. As I also feel that those are elements that represent this culture, although I do intend to do so with the initial idea of producing work that does not embody the negative accepts of the genre.
New possible outcomes:
• Interviews/Documentary - (Live bio instead of the written format, to go on myspace. Will incorporate him at work lyrical & instrumental, including thoughts about sub-theme relating to genre)
• Visuals to illustrate music (format of street poster art)
• T-shirt designs (generate interest to both his work & issue)
All work will be featured on his myspace account, as the majority of his clientele is generated through his page.
Thanks again for your comments
Hasina
