Final Project - Karina

Hello everyone! I have posted my idea before about exploring Russian graphic design. My idea is to see how it is developing at the moment, and compare it to the British graphic design industry. I have already sent an email to Academy of Russian graphic design, where I explained my interest in what they are doing and asked them for some information. And now it is a big concern for me that this project is very broad, so I seriously need to narrow it down and think about the outcome. I would really like to work on this project, because I have a strong interest in it, and would like to know more about it.

So to narrow it down…

For my Final Project I’m going to explore the notion of Russian agitation posters, mostly during Soviet time, I’m particular interested in this because agitation posters were the foundation of Russian graphics.

Outcome:

Produce my own agitation posters, using the style and conception of traditional Soviet agitation posters. The posters will reflect the perception and the mood of our modern society and community exertion.

Aims:

• Research the history of graphic design in other culture
• Study the notion of Soviet poster
• Examine the structure, context, layout and overall design
• Produce my own poster, based on research, giving it a certain disposition.

I'd be careful and stay away from just doing a stylistic copy K, cos there's been a lot of that in design lately. Franz Ferdinand is probably the biggest e.g. of that style being used again.. Plus you want to make it relevant for today if you decide to do the poster. One of the reasons everything was red/white/black and on cheap paper was because two colours was cheapest to produce, and the simple shapes stem from the fact that the general populace couldn't read and so something simple was needed to communicate...
I'd be weary of using the same stylistic approaches as the contemporary environment is very different..
perhaps you could look at chinese revolution posters also? The style hasn't been adopted by the mainstream as much as constructivism and is equally as powerful..

Look at issue 6 of graphic magazine to see chinese revolution poster influence. it is very striking.

jo's right, be very careful!
you need to study the history surrounding the posters to understand why they have such a sense of urgency. in looking at the circumstances as to why these posters exist you will find the basis for your contemporary version.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your comments!
I will definitely research this.

I believe you have to be careful so it doesn't end up being a research project finishing with a do-it-yourself poster. I'm failing to find the real pratical use to this. Maybe if you try to find why are the styles so different (and Joanne just gave you a few hints) and find something in between? The creation of a new approach to poster design relating both countries' graphism? Still missing...

Hi Karina! I'm not sure you should start researching Chinese design because you'll get sucked into an entirely different field, away from what you're passionate about. You obviously chose Russian design because it's an area you can personally relate to. Is there perhaps some aspect of Russian culture (not necessarily published graphics) that you can investigate and relate to contempary issues?

i can't see your point at all. it's pseudo-conceptualising to just relate the whole idea back to just our modern society. what about it? be more specific about what you're trying to say...

Hi Karina maybe you could put a modern day twist on the idea of 'agitation' posters as they were political etc Maybe a tongue in cheek approach could work about everyday agitations-crowded buses, taxes, late trains etc, re-inventing the genre as it were? i think its ok to draw inspiration from russian graphics but it does need an actual idea to build upon.

Please note that I have very serious reservations regarding this project...it is very weak! In contrast, there is still the strongest implication that you are producing another dissertation/extended essay.

I would also urge you not to rely on the production of a poster, this is way too light on content compared with the intensive range of outcomes envisaged by your peer group. I also have distinct issues with relying on the paraody of a classical genre, ie: the Russian Poster and its basis in classic constructavism.

There is no need for this project and at worse it will highlight the key issue that you have- namely difficulty in developing original concepts.

I strongly advise that you take this particular project no further.

I agree with what you saying I wouldn't really enjoy producing a poster as my final major project outcome, is just that I tried to do some research in this area and I got stuck with this idea because it has interested me. I wanted to see how graphic design in Russia is developing, just because will be useful for me in the future. I will think about another area to find the idea from. Thank you for your comments!
