Chris Collicott - Design Community

Working from the idea that design does not exist in isolation, one interpretation of contemporary graphics is that creativity is formed around community and communication: the notion that ideas are formed through a flow of information, people and opinions, and that graphic design is one form of output.

The way designers portray themselves forms an essential part of how the creative community works and evolves. Graphic design provides a platform for promotion in all kinds of ways, but the way that people want to be perceived forms the basis for the community.

This concept would take the project in the direction of a collaboration to discover how creative people would like to be perceived, in order to see how the graphic community interacts and communicates with itself, and therefore how it evolves.

I’m not entirely sure what form the project will take, but I am starting in the direction of a collection of pieces of graphics by other creative people which I will then arrange to present the multi-faceted frontage of graphic design.

thanks

chris

Chris who?...full name please.

Main flaws in this proposal are that you admit within it that you are not sure what form it will take- dangerous andthat you are relying on external collaboration- equally dangerous. By external influences I presume you mean the professional sector, I think you will find them very buy and notoriously difficult to make pro-active in support of your project.

Also whilst it is positive to assume that good design shoudl be based on a collaborative agenda, agencies and companies are surprisingly cagey about disclosing their internal affairs.

You can gather, from the issues that I am raising that these doubts out-weigh positives at this stage. Discuss further...

well i've thought through the points made, and have come up with the idea of a simple typographic solution.

in essence i would send an invitation to creative people asking them to draw a letter and send it back:
the way it would work is by me sending an A and asking for a B, based on the A.
then i'd send the B to someone else and ask them to respond by creating a C, and so on.

the final outcome of this would be a typeface that changes throughout by many people building on and reacting to the single letterform they receive.

i would also like to explore the area further and send out some form of package including some very stylised artifacts and ask the recipient to respond with a letterform.
by sending the same artifacts to different people all kinds of different responses would be generated by their reaction.

hope that makes sense.

cheers

extra note:

the project would be based on the idea of the evolution of graphic design through people and their unique surroundings and experiences.

this project is very much about the process of individual perceptions and how these seemingly random reactions affect the creative output. this will be reflected in the final outcome.

as regards to getting people involved, i have a few people already available, and i will make it very easy and pleasant for the recipient to respond.

any comments would be greatly appreciated!
