Anna Rhodes... in a spot of bother

I've just got my quote back from the maufacturers, and it's going to be insanely expensive.
You can see the emails at http://annarhodes.blogspot.com

It's clear I need serious fnancial help - funding or sponsorship. Does anyone have any ideas?

Ouch, that's steep!! Have you considered contacting a company that specialise in coin-operated rides and ask them to do a scaled-up version of something they already have the blueprints for? (May have to forgo the giraffe, but your core concept will remain unchanged).

contact some big names for sponsership who might want to keep it after in their store or another idea is that red nose day is coming up, maybe you could get sponsered to make it and split money with charity???

E-mail lots of different companies and see if anyone out there can give you a lower quote first I'd say.

Another option may be to find an interested buyer in advance of production and arrange a 30 day period of grace on Severn Lamb's invoice to you... this is a large account by all means so hopefully they will accomodate you. If you could sell the Giraffe afterwards like Joanna is doing with her Gashapon vendor this would help pay a significant chunk.

The other thought I'm having is sponsorship (though I'm not sure who from at this point). Traditional fund raising methods such as events might leave you falling short. Michelle may be on to something with her charity idea, though if they were paying 50% I'm sure they would want to impose something on the design... like a red nose.

thanks guys - that's helpful. I'll contact big names like you said, charity probably isn't an option because i'd have to make even more money.
I'm so dead set on it being a giraffe. oh dear oh dear... I think I need a press release.

What about London Zoo as a potential buyer? Or an art gallery as a permanent installation piece? (Considering how popular the slides for adults 'sculpture' was at the Tate!)

Yes - i though about London Zoo - but this will not be a childrens ride - it will probably have health and saftey issues anyway. A gallery is a good idea though. I just have no clue how to approach people asking for money...

Advice from a friend:

JUst read your blog. Most interesting. I think the next step around this is to find new poeple to deliver you a quote. I was concnred that maybe some of your £10k was going to the level of service they were providing - i.e. doing everything, and supplying a porjct manager. You'd save £5k there right away

yes, yes
that sounds good
a project manager though? isn't that just thrown in?
they've got to be paid, though ... interesting he made a point of mentiong. sounds like he's hiring out of house
I would talk to college colleagues and tutors today to ask if there are any preferred suppliers,
formalise a brief - two hours woprk - and send of with an indication of budget
only then would I think about altering the brief; same doscourse with different design?
why different design?
and sorry james - what do you mean formalise a brief and indicate my budget? i'm bad at all this lingo
wellm, not different, more ... easier to manufacture
sorry. Write a product build brief that a manufacturer would understand
indicate budget is another way of saying: tell them what you've got to spend
haha i see
i can't write a product build brief!
of course you can
you already sort of have in your blogspot
Hmmm i just don't know any technical jargon
that's fine.
1. Name 2. description. 3. materials. 4. how art stupplied. 5 when art supplied. 6. proofing mechanism 7. when due
basic stiff
just break the project down into these separate elements, and then attache descriptions and art
you are really onlyadapting what's on your bog, and you don't nmeed to be techinical
sorry if I'm being a bity random, but I'm on the phone as well!
you might also think about materials ... maybe balsa wood and paint and lacquer cheaper than fibreglas? Perspex?
that kind of thing
15:45
hmm yes
thank you for your advice
24/7
i'd like to sell it afterwards - so if i could find a buyer I could ask the maunfacturers for a 30 day period of grace...
but i'm soooo bad at asking people for money. i wouldn't have the first clue on how to approach someone for sponsorship or funding
15:50
it's easy. Let's sit down soon and talk. it can even be in office hours#
15:55
who do you think i could ask to sponsor it/buy it?
16:30
sorry love, meetings. call me tonight
16:35
that's ok
24/7
Ok well, what time shall i ring?
le'ts squeeze n a drin k before I go west. 1930, 30 mins
16:40
ok then sure

if you could find a company to sponsor you & pay for the project, they could donate all the money collected from the machine itself (say a quid a ride).

you'd get your giraffe made, the company would get some good press / publicity, also people will be mre likely to ride it if they know the money goes to charity - take it around london & you could raise a fair amount of cash...

try banks - they have loads of money (obviously) and always wanna be down with the kids

How about just buying one on ebay, wouldn't be a larger version I know, but perhaps you could modify the part that makes it move, and make it adult height... that way you d still get the childs perspective. maybe you could find a really wide animal, hippo, or such that might be able to hold an adult?

So i had a meeting yesterday night with a matketing friend of mine and we've come up with a plan.
I'm putting together a Media Kit, with covering letter to each company I'm asking to sponser. There will be brand/logo placement for each company who decides to sponsor me, plus, a goody bag with their literature in it and my log book for the project available to each person who rides the sculpture. Once sponsorship is acheived, hopefully there will be media interest etc. I'm also looking for an Angel investor - so if anyone's got a rich dad....!
