Oliver Simpson: VJ stock imagery

i am attracted by the relatively recent phenomenon of VJing, i.e. manipulating and projecting visuals to compliment live music. In general, i see a lot of rather crude imagery used for this purpose, and i think that VJs are in need of quality material. I will be producing a set of moving image clips which will be available for public use. Conscious that mainstream contemporary dance music is largely homogenous in its sound, i will create a diverse range of imagery in reaction to this. Clips will be designed to work as layers, making it possible to build complex visual structures. I will incorporate live action footage, animation (possibly some 3D work) and still photography, as well as other graphic elements including typography, in order to compile a wealth of imagery. I intend for this material to be used for a live event and will be in contact with professional VJs with whom i can engage.

Cool...you now have the basis for an innovative and potentially- very creative project. It is good that you will be attending the ICA event, in order to establish conatacts, (could be useful for feedback at some point later) and that you are approaching the issue with an open-mind and envisage utilising a broad range of media and still and movinng image.

Hi Ollie

Have you heard of Hexstatic? They create live visual graphics sychronised to live djing. Some of their visuals require the audience to wear 3D glasses which adds a great dynamic to the display. They often play at the ICA if you fancy having a look. Check these out if your interested
