Olga Matryoshka as a reflection of Russian culture

I have been straggling with a idea for final project for really long time. All my ideas weren't any good, but now i think i finally came up with something i would be interested to do.

Nesting dolls are well known and most popular among all Russian souvenirs. The most famous one is called "matryoshka".

The first Russian doll was born in 1890 and was made as a toy for children. The first dolls and traditional ones are those that look like a young Russian woman dressed in Russian native costume with a scarf on her head. But as time went by and social and political situation in Russia changed, matryoshka drammaticly evolved too. Some of them even gained the look of some of the most influential people in the history of Russia. Looking back at all matryoshka's various images, it is possible to track the political, social and cultural changes in the counry.

The phenomenon of matryoshka always fascinated me that is why i have decided to do project on thise topic.

For the final piece i was thinking to produce a series of posters which will show the changes in matryoshka's appearance reflecting the changes in Russian history.


There i want to show a rough example of how matryoshka has been changing through the years depending on the situation in Russia.

Hung's Live Breif

I have been looking for a live project to do for my final major! It took slightly longer than I have expected but here it is!

The company is called Run Jump Fly Productions, it is a production company for British Free-skiing, and the company began on summer 2005. Where they spent that summer creating an all-British movie featuring the young talented British skiers around the world. Then they have been increasing their knowledge of the British ski scene and the art of film production in order to prepare for the their goal of creating their first official production ‘Ski city’ (DVD). Over their first season in Verbier Switzerland the company grew and took on Nick Southwell as an assistant cameraman and marketing manager.

In one year the Company has changed from an idea to a well-established name within the UK community and it is continuing to grow with the sport as it rises in popularity and notoriety throughout the world.

I have been contacting Nick about my situation and possibility of working with them. It was a good timing for me to ask them, as they were looking for designers to improve their current website (http://www.runjumpfly.net) as well as creating their whole new magazine about British free-skiing and their production…
They have also just finished shooting their 2nd DVD Switzerland! Nick has also allowed me to design the whole DVD packaging for them but the DVD would not be out until August, so this could be something I can after my final!
In the mean time for this FMP, I will be redesigning their website and work along with them with their Run Jump Fly Magazine! As they have given me the chance to do the laying out and font design for the magazine! They are planning to launch this magazine in June/July this year 2007, so I will do my best to finish the magazine before the 12th of June.

So I've come to a bit of a dilemma. My client has cancelled numerous appointments and hasn't given me any feedback in regards to concepts for the video shoots and has generally been pretty reticent about everything. Whilst she was fully supportive in the beginning and believed in the project's aims, I'm beginning to get frustrated by the one way street this has become and it's holding my schedule plan back. I understand that working with someone who is successful is going to be difficult as they are in constant demand, but I'm not in a position to wait around.

It's not essential for this project to have a client as the main focus is the idea of and the actual format, but the benefits of having a client are having a good name to the piece and the unforeseen turns that a collaboration brings.

So people, I ask you,
To drop the client or not to drop?

Christine - updates

Hi everyone,

i've reigned myself in thanks to some feedback from people in the class, i lost my way a bit! I'm back to concentrating on my original project, and here are a couple of things i sorted today.

I handed in my notice to protest (against archaic foundation principles etc) at Charing cross police station today to a nice police officer who chuckled at the reason i gave on my official notice letter. I will be protesting in Parliment square on the 21st April along with Mark Thomas (comedian and activist) and other people. Mark Thomas regularly organises protests, and this one is for a mass lone protest for any cause, There are some interesting ones such as 'diet pills with every burger' and 'brides for trolls' So it should be fun. Taking part in a larger demo in May too.

I've also completed an online petition on the Downing street website, asking the prime minister for a ban on foundation tutors promoting these out of date ideas; i should be informed if it's been accepted soon. If it does, i want you all to sign! All a petition needs is 200 signatures for it to be passed on to the minister concerned. I'll let you know what happens. Working on some other stuff too but too early to give you any details.

Hey guys,

Spam e-mail is a growing practice (90 billion messages are sent
everyday) with which any internet user is familiar. What is not as
well known is the creative effort undertaken by hackers to bypass
anti-spam security systems. The lines below are an example:

"It is this way of it, said she. Either you will go on to speak or
set-off. I left our chambers pretty bare. If we had beds, if
Catriona, Will you not forgive me that time?"

This curious bit of text was designed to elude security software.
It was composed using the modern day equivalent of the cut-up
technique popularized by William Burroughs, by mixing bits
of separate texts (often literary works available online) to create a new one.

I propose to: 1. Actively seek out spam by creating a spam-magnet email account; 2. Select interesting examples to create a book that documents this work; 3. Create a website/mailing list to which people could subscribe to receive their monthly spoem. This would be an inversion of its original role: it would be received by people who actually requested it, and the text would be the main element of the email.
What I find interesting about this is the repositioning of something
that is discarded and is connected to a darker side of contemporary
capitalism (spam e-mail main topics are Pornography,
prescription drugs, sexual enhancement products, fake University diplomas) into a more noble context of art/poetry.

I apologise for my late response to the concerns about this project. Last few days back home were extremely busy. Clarifying my objective through this web-project, my aim is to thoroughly practise and strengthen my skills in Flash web design and introduce myself and my work, in the minds of the Cypriot market industry. During my research over there, I tried to get hold of companies whose activities would be interesting enough to be part of this years’ Final Show (advertising, print, fashion etc.).
All these companies have very poor looking html websites, done amateurishly by either themselves or freelance designers. They wanted to update their image on the web, since they seem to be having a growing progression in the market and the public’s awareness, and they trusted me with the task of providing them with this successful new web-look. All the contacts were made through people I know.

GTS’s concern that 9 weeks may not be enough to undertake all the websites (3), have raised a similar concern on my part as well. Although I am confident that I can complete the project, I feel that possibly I can accomplish a better standard outcome, if I only engage in 2 websites, instead of 3. I would really appreciate GTS’s view on that. Having said that, the 2 websites that I feel would be best to work at, are the one representing Contact Advertising and Extreme4x4Adventure, since I like the fact that one is a non-profit organisation and the other is a full-working experience advertising agency. I think they would look compatible together. I have complete freedom from the clients to work in any way I want, since they believe they are gaining a much better website for free…

Karina - just to clarify...

I am researching all aspects of youth culture in Russia at the moment; I am looking at youth TV, fashion, music etc. My intend is to demonstrate modern life in Russia, and give a clear idea of what is popular, what is on now. Probably everything that I am researching now is influenced by other cultures, but has an input from our own culture as well, I find a lot of similarities between Russian and English young people styles of life.

What I have shown before is just a part of my research, where I looked at Youth TV in Russia. Each of them has or had a major number of viewers from young audience, and are the most popular shows on TV for my generation. They are Russian versions of such TV programs as ‘Big Brother’, ‘X Factor’, ‘Pop Idol’etc.
… I just thought it would be interesting for you guys to see what we have here in Russia.

Karina - Research Update

Audience: everyone who is interested in cultural differences and is keen to learn about hobbies and lives of young people in other countries.

Aim: to compare and explore two cultures.

Area of observation: Russia and England (nowadays).

Discussions with GTS and I think I've got a worthwhile proposal. I intend to produce a painted Bollywood hoarding (see the amazing historic examples above, spot the modern one?) to reflect India’s fading traditions. The poster shall utilise the age-old hoarding technique as to preserve identity and authenticity whilst parodying and subversing classic Bollywood to expose all the ‘drama’ and changes experienced in a youth-orientated India. This shall thus encapsulate many notions of preserving identity, Bollywood as an everlasting archive of India, digital & global takeover, whilst revealing the effects of contemporary India as seen through an already ‘westernised’ British Asian perspective.

A series of A1 posters each representing a different theme e.g. sex & marriage, shopping & globalisation, youth demand etc, may also be produced. Elements of each poster shall then be brought together in the billboard size hoarding, much like the way a Bollywood poster campaign is created.The billboard hoarding will take first priority and shall hopefully be sourced and commissioned from genuine film artists in India. Mary's FMP update

For the past couple of weeks I have been creating designs for Paul's Boutique brand, which Paul loved and he purely wants me to concentrate on that with the idea of the best designs going on to the clothes to be sold in Topshop & Selfridges. This turns my project around a little, as initially I was planning to create graphics for posters/leaflets/website in order to increase customers' awareness of the brand. I suppose I can still do a part of that further on in the project. I've had lots of fun creating designs similar to this one and am very excited about the project's change. Do you guys think thats ok for the project? Comments very appreciated.

Setting up my own blog soon, have not had much time. I have actually went to see Paul at his studio today in South Harrow where all the customizing takes place and all the bits and pieces are put together before they go off to the shops. (All these clothes and bags were lying around... it was heavenly) We discussed my designs and he is giving me plenty of creative freedom, together with his ideas & criticism and feedback. I have been asked to come back tomorrow to do my design work there in the studio.

Charlie Bentley: The Newspaper

It has been said that newspapers will ‘check out in 2044’, and with this in mind I want to maintain the production of the newspaper.

In the same way people have a feel for vinyl as of new digital music formats, newsprint has a quality that the internet and other new medias don’t.

People use newspapers for so many things other than just a format for reading the news, such as insulation, doodling, making fires; and in the past, wrapping fish and chips, cleaning windows, fly swotting etc.

I will be looking to turn the newspaper into the ultimate versatile product. Persuading people to buy the newspaper to use, not just to read.

I will absorb myself into the newspaper and focus my thoughts on the sensory issue, the history, and scale, of the paper.


Possible outcomes:

Create a newspaper with a twist-when opened each page is perforated, ready to rip out to use for specific purposes. For example, a page is covered in vinegar ready for window cleaning, Or instructions on how to make a paper boat.

Or create a newspaper that folds out into a massive poster/wall hanging, which you hang up on the wall and punch out the perforated shapes for use when needed.

Or the idea of promoting the newspaper as a product - no need to buy windolene, use the newspaper. This could be in the form of a TV advert.

Or a retrospective...

The outcome of this FMP could take many forms- a newspaper itself with a twist, a newspaper sculpture, a witty film, adverts, poster campaign.

Chelle:what to do at final show?

Hey guys, I have been thinking about what to have at our final show for my project and would like to know your thoughts. Ideas:

- having my billboard printed twice and having one of them there. (10ft high by 20ft wide)
- Some sort of autobiography however I do not want to write a book as that would take me too long. Maybe it could just be with images and a bit of text???
-my personal blog is definately the best way of showing my journey so could I simply have that? (would rather have more)
-goodie bags promoting myself i.e mugs, keyrings etc
-magazine spreads printed large scale demonstrating each method I undertook to become famous
-any other ideas??

My visit in Cyprus helped me evaluate my clients concerning this web design project. I had a number of long meetings with various companies and organizations and I came down with 3 potential clients. I think the following 3 cover the requirements for an interesting and stimulating project which includes an enterprise importing and distributing international brands, an advertising agency with plenty of output material concerning our field of graphic design (motion graphics, advertising, branding etc), and finally a non-profit organization of adventure seekers and 4x4 car lovers.
These are the profiles of those clients:

1. Kirmico Ltd
Kirmico is a company involved with office machines and equipment for almost 50 years, for the last 12 years they have been specializing in Printers, Automatic Coin Processing Machines, and Professional Scanners and document Shredding machines. Kirmico has been importing well-known office machine brands like KYOCERA printers, SCAN COIN and FUJITSU.

The company always employs trained and experienced technicians and engineers for the installation and support of the proposed printers and various machinery. They are in productive cooperation with many respectable companies involved in the Information Technology.

Furthermore, they organize training seminars to a number of technicians from the I.T. Dept. of various major account customers which makes them capable of first level repairs which saves a lot of down-time cost to all parties concerned.


2.Contact Advertising Agency LTD
Contact are following an evolutionary route from a traditional advertising agency to full spectrum Communications Company. They offer Integrated Communication services and they generate ideas that build value for their clients' brands and ensure their success. They also believe in strategic partnerships in order to accelerate their evolution for their clients benefit.
Contact's Mission:
Generate strategic ideas that help brands resonate in people's hearts and thus they create brand loyalty and brand preference.


3.Extreme 4x4 Adventure
The Land Rover story runs parallel to the history of 4x4 driving and adventure seeking. This could not have been any different in Cyprus and these locals or visitors who enjoy this exciting side of life… those who dare.
Adventure does not necessarily need to be on the wild or even dangerous side. It can very well be, of a pleasant type. Those who seek it are those who like the adrenaline to run above normal everyday levels hoping to be just enough to add some spice in their life.

The website will be dedicated to all those enthusiasts’ who love Land Rovers and their unique capabilities. It aims to promote everything related to this particular make of automobiles and assist those people who want to enjoy such an experience. It will attempt to explain and bring to their attention what they may need to know.

Subtraction

I would like to produce an experimental piece of graphics, based around the key idea of subtraction. I will explore formal aspects like structure, scale and tactility to create a printed object- not sure if it will be a book exactly but i would like to work within the confines of pages and layout- that addresses notions of maximalism and minimalism in graphic design (the ornamental, decorative, and cluttered and the bare, straightforward and essential).

Flea markets, as highly graphic places, chaotic and seemingly undesigned in nature would supply the raw material for the book, whilst locating the project within contemporary visual culture. A selected number of images of local markets and of retrieved objects will be the basis for experimentation. The vernacular visual language of these can refer not only to the designer’s role as cultural mediator within both high and low culture, but also to designers fascination with the beauty of the spontaneous and undesigned, that is frequently coupled with the contradictory urge to order and plan. .

This project would allow me to produce a beautiful piece of print whilst pushing my vocational interests.

Karina - Youth Cultures comparison

Hi everyone! I have been posting so many ideas for F.M.P. and was really struggling on choosing the right one for me. But with GTS’s help I think I have something interesting and worth to do as my final project. Especially because it is related to my own culture and can be a good project to represent my work in the future.

Idea proposal: I will be looking at the development of lifestyles of two youth cultures one in Russia and another one in England. Relying on my own experience, with help from my friends, and comparing it to my own peer group in London.

I will be looking at Russian equivalent of:
• Youth tv
• Celebrities
• Snack Food
• Romantic Rituals
• Topical Fashion
• Reading
• Family Relationships
• Gay scene
…etc

The outcome could be produced with use of images and text, and set of information reflecting real life experience of two cultures.

Nowadays in Russia youth culture is growing and learning mostly from the west, being influenced by it allot. Russian youth culture and my generation have always been influenced by other cultures from the west e.g. music, fashion, styles etc. If you look at good teen magazines, you can find a lot there which has been brought from other culture, I guess this is all because Russia just started to change after Soviet time, and youth culture is just starting to develop itself and needs something to look up to. Although it’s trying to bring its own culture as well, which I have noticed, because it is easy for me to see these changes, where I can compare it from what I see in UK.

Highly talented up and coming music producer with influences such as Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, J Dilla, Madlib, Damien Rice, Alice & John Coltrane and the Beatles to name but a few. His musical focus is centred on Hip Hop / Nu-Jazz / Break-beat and Experimental beats.

The client believes that themes found in the lyrics and images of commercial Hip-Hop, such as the allure of wealth, fame, degradation of women and illicit activities, have had a major impact on the public’s perceptions of Hip-Hop culture, this has become the predominant representation of Hip-Hop culture today and as a result has had a negative influence on youth culture today. Hip-Hop has the power to educate, inform and empower today’s youth. He wants his work to reflect a positive aspect to this field.

Aim:
In response to the client’s views on the negative representation of Hip-Hop culture, my goal is to help facilitate, promote and preserve Hip-Hop’s original vision, though the development of his own work both lyrical and instrumental. I will create an identity for his music that is non-stereotypical, in order to highlight the positive aspects of this music genre, with the aid of graphical responses to further establish the client, generate interest and draw in more potential clients.

I don’t intend on trying to revolutionize society’s perception of the Hip-Hop culture, but to illustrate an alternative response to this genre and in doing so demonstrate a different approach that can still have a positive outcome to a subject with negative public representations.

Hi, i know that haven't been writing for a long time.
So,i have been thinking about people's personalities, who they really are and how sometimes you want to be a different person in front of a new group of people. Become somebody else, may be somebody better or more interesting or just somebody different.
So, i was thinking to create a guide with full information about different characters and interests. For example, you want to pretend to be a model, so from the guide you will get information how to pretend to be one. The places they go, the language they speak and all the other information so you can easily fake it. I think that sometimes it can be real fun just for a little while to pretend to be somebody else.

Alex Kirmitsis - Web Design Exploration (B)

This post is for further clarification regarding my FMP idea about designing 3 websites for professional clients in Cyprus (International Brands).

a. An important aspect I have to make clear is that the companies I’m collaborating with, do not have existing websites, besides one (Kirmico LTD, representing the Kyocera printers), and even that one is interested in modifying it.

b. The websites will not be super complex. I am certainly not a web design expert but the task in front of me is definitely within my reach. The projects will be focused on good design and layout rather than on complex coding like, online ordering, members area, etc. I will try my best to meet my customer’s expectations, which I know for a fact does not include compound coding.

c. All customers are Cypriot entrepreneurs with their own company who want a new, fresh and modern website for their local company, selling, among others things, products of international brands. This I think, is the key that makes this project interesting. That is being said to justify that I will not be attempting to create or recreate websites inspired by the international brands web design (ESPRIT, Kyocera, etc) or anything similar, but sites for 3 independent, well known, Cypriot enterprises who are interested in promoting their businesses.

d. I will be leaving for Cyprus on Sunday 25 March and staying for a week solely to meet with my clients, discuss this brief in full, and collect all the data I will need to execute this project.

Paul's Boutique

I have just received an email from Paul (the man behind the brand) and he said he was really impressed with my work! I then spoke to him on the phone and he sounded enthusiastic about my ideas for posters&graphics, etc, he said they are expanding the brand with not only womens wear but mens and childrens too.

I have started to generate design ideas that can be used towards posters, swing tags, clothes and more and will show them to him when I have more. On top of it all he sounded like a really cool guy! Really excited!
